Aging into Medicare, one step at a time
Turning 65 comes with a to-do list nobody hands you. This is a calm walkthrough of your Initial Enrollment Period and the things worth thinking about, so you can approach it informed instead of overwhelmed.
The Initial Enrollment Period
For most people aging in, the Initial Enrollment Period is generally a seven-month window built around your 65th birthday. Understanding it is the first step. Exact rules can vary by situation, so we will confirm what applies to you.
3 months before
The three months before your birthday month. Signing up early can help your coverage start on time.
Your birthday month
The month you turn 65 sits in the middle of the window.
3 months after
The three months after your birthday month round out the seven-month period.
A few things worth sorting out early
You do not need to have answers to all of these. They are just the questions we help people work through, ideally before the window rather than during it.
Do you have other coverage?
If you or your spouse are still working and covered by an employer plan, your timing and choices can be different. This is one of the most common things people get wrong, and it is worth talking through.
Part B timing
Whether to take Part B right away depends on your situation, including other coverage you may have. Delaying it without the right kind of coverage can sometimes lead to a lasting penalty, so timing matters.
Prescription coverage
Even if you take few or no medications today, going without creditable drug coverage can lead to a Part D late-enrollment penalty later. We will help you weigh it.
Comparing your options
Once you understand the pieces, the real work is comparing what is available to you. That is where an independent agent can save you time and second-guessing.
