Straight answers about what this costs and who pays
Money is stressful to talk about, especially on top of everything else. So we will be plain with you. Here is how families usually pay for home care, and one big misconception worth clearing up first.
Traditional Medicare generally does not pay for non-medical home care
This surprises almost everyone, so we say it early. Traditional Medicare is health insurance. It generally covers short-term, skilled medical care ordered by a doctor, not the ongoing personal care, companionship, and help around the house that we provide.
Some Medicare Advantage plans have begun offering limited in-home support as an extra benefit, but it varies a great deal by plan and is usually narrow. If you think your plan might include something, we are glad to help you look into it, without overpromising.
A few common paths
Most families use one of these, or a combination. We will help you understand which apply to your situation.
Private pay
The most common way families pay is directly, out of income or savings. It is straightforward, there is no approval process, and you can start, pause, or adjust whenever you need to. We quote a care plan after a free in-home assessment, so the number reflects what your family actually needs, not a package you do not.
Long-term care insurance
If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, it commonly helps pay for exactly this kind of care. The catch is the paperwork, which can be a maze. We are used to it, and we will help you read the policy, document the care, and file what the insurer needs. Benefits and eligibility vary by policy, so we will look at yours specifically.
Veterans' benefits
Some veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for help through programs such as VA Aid and Attendance, which can offset the cost of in-home care for those who are eligible. Eligibility rules are specific and we are not the final word on them, so we will point you to the right VA resources and help where we can while you confirm what you qualify for.
We quote care after we understand it
We do not put a price tag on the website, because a real number depends on what your parent actually needs, how many hours, and what the days look like. After a free in-home assessment, you get a clear care plan and a clear cost, with no obligation to move forward. You will never be surprised by a bill from us.
